Smenospongia sp.-"black massive"

Notes: Black, massive, tough, with a strongly warty surface. It releases abundant mucus and darkens in air as other species of the genus. It is close to Smenospongia conulosa Pulitzer-Finali, 1986, also pictured here, which is usually dark green. But the fibers of this species are much thicker than those of S. conulosa, hence its greater toughness. Whether it is a different species remains to be determined by further detailed comparisons. Available names that need to be looked into are S. cerebriformis (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) and S. musicalis (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864), both redescribed by van Soest (1980), and the latter found in cryptic reef habitats by Rützler et al. (2014).
