- Notes: Massive to lobate, jet black, often smooth, with scattered oscules. Surface may be conulose on the sides. Presence of spongin fibrils and sulfur/garlic smell confirmed it to be an Ircinia; fibers are not as cored by foreign material as the other species of Ircinia. Found growing near I. strobilina black and they are easily distinguished. Smaller I. strobilina appear to have large conules like the adults. It may be confused with Hyrtios cavernosus.
