Species Description and Notes

Notes: Orange encrusting sponge with the surface covered by irregularly polygonal armor plates. Spaces between plates with soft tissue and oscules. According to van Soest (2009), it could correspond to Placospongia intermedia sensu de Laubenfels (1936b), from the Caribbean side of Panama. For this reason, in the third edition of this guide this species was named Placospongia sp.2 (?intermedia sensu de Laubenfels, 1936b). However, detalied analises carried out by David-Colón et al (2023), placed the Bahamian material pictured here under the new species P. colombiensis.
